  1. It’s frustrating, but we try to have backup loads available. We also keep good relationships with brokers to help fill in gaps quickly.
  2. We set expectations upfront and trust our drivers to follow the plan unless they run into an issue. We check in only if they’re significantly off schedule.
  3. We’ve been using McLeod Software. It integrates with most of our systems and gives real-time tracking updates.
  4. We always notify customers as soon as possible if we foresee a delay. Transparency goes a long way in keeping them satisfied.
  5. I think owner-operators are more flexible but can be less predictable. Company drivers are more consistent, especially when it comes to following dispatch instructions.
  6. Finding enough drivers is a big one. We often need to bring in temporary drivers, which adds another layer of complexity.
  7. We use a messaging system with check-ins at key points, like pick-up and delivery, to keep communication frequent but not too intrusive.
  8. I use optimization software to sequence stops, but you also need to account for traffic and potential delays at each stop.
  9. Not completely. Automated systems help, but you still need human intuition for problem-solving, especially during unforeseen delays.
  10. It’s tough! We try to give drivers a voice in route planning. It might not always be the fastest route, but it keeps morale high.
